In many places across Thailand, you can find beautiful waterfalls. But the Bua Thong Waterfalls, also known as the Sticky Waterfalls, are truly unique – unlike anything else you’ll see in the country.
These waterfalls are located in the lush and scenic Sri Lanna National Park in Northern Thailand, about a one-hour drive from Chiang Mai.
🛣️ Getting There
You have two main options for visiting the Sticky Waterfalls:
- Plan a dedicated trip – This is what we did the first time we visited Chiang Mai. We hired a driver who waited for us while we explored. You can arrange a trip through your hotel or via one of the many travel agencies scattered around the city.
- Make it a stop on a road trip – On our second visit, we were driving a rental car from Pai to Chiang Mai and made a detour to stop at the falls.
🌟 What Makes the Sticky Waterfalls So Special?
The uniqueness of these waterfalls comes from a white-cream-colored mineral that coats the limestone rocks, giving them a rough, grippy texture. Your bare feet “stick” to the rocks, allowing you to walk up and down the falls without slipping – hence the nickname “Sticky Waterfalls.”
The water flows over three levels, adding to the charm and beauty of the site.
The falls are set in a vibrant green forest, with colorful butterflies flitting about. The combination of lush vegetation, white rocks, and cool water creates a magical and refreshing atmosphere.

🎟️ Entry & Facilities
- Entrance is free!
- You’ll find toilets, showers, and stalls selling drinks and snacks.
- There are large grassy areas and benches – perfect for a picnic.
- The walk from the parking lot to the falls takes just 2 minutes.
Before entering the waterfall area, we removed our shoes. (Fun fact: we almost got confused with that, few other people had the same shoes we did – just make sure you grab your own pair on the way out! 😄)
🧗 What Can You Do There?
There are several ways to experience the Sticky Waterfalls:
- Walk down the stairs and climb back up the rocks.
- Climb down the rocks and return via the stairs.
- Or, the most adventurous and fun option (our favorite) – climb down AND back up the rocks themselves.
In steeper areas, ropes are provided to help with balance and grip during the descent or climb.
⚠️ Important Tip: Some rocks may have a thin layer of algae that makes them slippery. Always test your footing to make sure your feet are sticking securely before taking your next step. (Ask me how I know 😉)

📸 Take It Slow and Soak It In
The trail is beautiful, so don’t rush. Stop from time to time to admire the view, take photos, and enjoy the moment. There are plenty of rocks to sit and rest on if you get tired.
It took us about 1.5 hours to do the full up-and-down climb, including photo breaks. We loved it so much that we did the hike twice – on two separate visits!
If climbing isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the cool, refreshing pools near the falls.

🎒 What to Bring
Don’t bring anything that might get ruined by water – you’ll likely get wet! We brought:
- A waterproof bag for valuables like wallets and passports
- A clear waterproof pouch for our phone so we could take photos worry-free
- Sunscreen
- Mosquito repellent
- A bottle of water
🕘 When to Go
To avoid the crowds, try to arrive early in the morning or close to closing time (5:00 PM).
✅ Final Thoughts
An unforgettable, one of a kind experience. Don’t miss it!
Whether you’re climbing the sticky rocks, splashing in the pools, or just enjoying the natural scenery, Bua Thong Sticky Waterfalls is a highlight of any trip to Northern Thailand.
